The first edition of this work in a half cloth binding. Ink inscription to the half title page, dated 1917. Illustrated with a tipped-in frontispiece and eighty full-page black-and-white photographs by Frederick Evans, who became widely regarded as the greatest architectural photographer of his era. This work explores twenty-five beautiful great houses of France, such as Mont St. Michel, Pierrefonds, Chateau Gaillard, Loches, Langeais, Montreuil-Bellay, and many more. With an introduction by W. H. Ward. Theodore Cook was a British writer and art critic, known for publishing various books about art. His mother, the artist Jane Elizabeth Cook, encouraged Theodore to travel around Europe, which inspired this book. Undated, dated through copies held at the British Library. In a half cloth binding. Externally sound, with marks to the boards and spine and light shelf wear to the extremities. Front hinge is slightly strained, but held firmly by cords. Internally, firmly bound.
