The first edition of this very scarce work.Illustrated with a chromolithographic title page, and twelve lithographic plates. These plates are produced by Day & Son, 'lithographer to the Queen', after the work of French historical painter Pierre-Antoine Labouchere.The plates are accompanied by letterpress descriptions by the Swiss Protestant minister and historian of the Reformation Jean-Henri Merle d'Aubigne. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Tide marks to head of front board. Joints starting, with boards tender. Cloth at back strip head detaching. Lacking free endpapers. Internally, binding failed due to gutta percha. Small closed tears and chipping to page perimeters. Pages generally bright, with foxing to title page, and spotting throughout.
