A wonderful, alphabetically arranged study of British birds by renowned ornithologist David Bannerman, the Curator of the British Museum of Natural History from 1919 to 1952. Bannerman provides species identification, distribution, migration, and breeding behaviours of each species discussed. For this work, artist George E. Lodge painted three-hundred and seventy-seven images depicting four-hundred and thirty-five species. In the publisher's original, green cloth binding. Nine volumes in the original, unclipped dust wrapper. Volume one, four and five lacking the dust wrapper. Externally, very smart to most volumes. Light bumping to the extremities and the occasional mark to boards. Damp staining to boards of volume V and to the front board of volume III. Occasional slight offsetting to endpapers. Dust wrappers are very smart, with light edge wear and the odd tear. A touch of sunning to the wraps, mainly to the spine. The odd mark to the wraps, with light spotting to the reverse. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Ink annotations to volume I, page 34-36. Label to title page of volume V. Volume V lacking plates 1, 8, 10, 12, 22, 25, 27, 28 and 32.
