A vanishingly scarce work, last seen at auction in 1906.The second editionIllustrated with a frontispiece, engraved title page, two plates, and in-text engravings.Collated, complete. A charming topographical look at the Abbey and Palace of Holyrood, exploring the two important institutions in Edinburgh, thus providing a wide history of the city. Holyrood Abbey is a now-ruined abbey which was founded in 1128, which only fell into ruin in the seventeenth century, not even a century before this work was published. Holyrood Palace is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland, being the principal royal residence in Scotland since the sixteenth century. Originally the Palace was a guest house for the Abbey, before being greatly expanded after the Scottish Reformation. Many historically significant events occurred within the walls, including Mary Queen of Scots' witnessing the murder of David Rizzio, which is detailed in this work. This expanded edition includes notes on the natural history of the area, the laws and privileges of the sanctuary, and annals of the Chapel Royal.Written by Henry Courtoy, who was Keeper of the Chapel Royal. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart, with some light rubbing to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities.
