In addition to this, the work uses charters as a way to understanding the feudal system, and legal possession. Dugdale highlights the wealth of the monasteries, and the importance they had in society prior to the Reformation - something that was not necessarily remembered in Elizabethan and Jacobean society. This work was the first of its scale, and inspired a new area of historical research. William Dugdale was an English antiquary and herald of the seventeenth century. He was a pioneer in medieval history as an academic subject and legitimised the study of monastic history. His 'Monasticon Anglicanum' was originally a collaboration with the English antiquary Roger Dodsworth and the first volume of this work was originally published in 1655. To this work, Dugdale described the history of various orders in England and Wales in addition to the individual monasteries. He explains the surviving foundation charters and those relating to the expansion of the monastery in addition to the known benefactions of the land made to the monastery.Volume I ESTC citation number R225645.Volume II ESTC citation number R211977.
