The illustrations are central to the historical message visually depicting Britain's changing landscape and the birth of the modern world. In the preface to the illustrated edition it suggests that this work differs from similar works of English history written in 1904 by the way it places everyday life at the centre. The aim is to move away from the history's of high culture to enable Green to understand the struggles faced by the working man. Beginning in 607 and ending in 1815. Volume Four concludes with a genealogical table and a complete timeline of notable dates which collate the information from each volume. In a half calf binding. Externally smart.
