A scarce copy of volume one and two of this collection, in full calf binding. This collection was originally complete in four volumes. The first edition of this work was published in 1685, in Paris. This collection is comprised of documentation of the art of the most excellent painters, according to French art historian, Andre Felibien, who was a chronicler of the arts and official court historian to Louis XIV of France. Felibien also used this particular work to highlight local French artists. This work was inspired by the 16th Century Italian Renaissance painter, Giorgio Vasari, who published his own version of The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors and Architects, in 1550. With an engraved frontispiece to volume one. In full calf binding. Externally, sound with slight rubbing, causing loss to the leather in places. Crack with a bend to the front right-hand corner of the board to volume two. Fading to the spine. Hinges slightly strained but holding firm. Light age toning and the odd mark to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Light age toning to pages with the occasional spot. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
