The first edition of this two volume work in the publisher's original cloth bindings, with pictorial gilt to the spines and front boards. Illustrated with 25 plates to each volume, and a folding map of Japan to the rear of Volume II. Collated, complete.Anna Cope Hartshorne (1860-1957) was an American writer based in Japan, who was also a founder and faculty member of Tsuda University, with her close friend Tsuda Umeko. This illustrated two-volume work is her history of Japan and the Japanese. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally, cloth is fairly smart, with shelf wear to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Small loss to the head of the spine to Volume II. Marks to the front board and spine of Volume I, and to the rear board and spine of Volume II. Front hinge to Volume I is slightly strained but held firmly. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for offsetting to the end papers. The front free end paper and frontispiece to Volume I are coming loose to the head of the pages. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated.
