Codrington was the first to make a study of Melanesian society and culture and his work is still held as a classic example of ethnography. Codrington's ethnographical approach was supported by his time as a missionary where he worked as a headmaster of a Melanesian school and he believed in the importance of living closely with those he studied to better understand the society, languages and customs. This work documents the results of his observations made on the Islands and looks into the anthropology and folklore of The Melanesians.
