This collection was first comprised in 1820 by Dr Aikin with the aim to provide a single volume of important poetry at a moderate cost, without abridgement or omissions. Aikin strived to protect the art of the poet, with this collection being so well-received that it was still being published twenty-five years on, in this edition. The biographical and critical notices of the authors added later. This particular edition was published after Dr Aikin's death. There is a supplement included by his daughter, Lucy Aikin, who was an English historical writer, biographer and correspondent. This collection is comprised of many influential poets of the time, including John Milton, John Dryden and Jonathan Swift. This work is set out in clear columns, with the poet and poem title to the head of each page and a short biography of each poet prior to their work. With a personal bookplate of T. W. Chester Martin to the front paste down and an ink inscription to the first blank, reading 'T. W. Chester Martin, on his leaving Harrow with the best wishes of his friend and tutor, G. W. Harris', dated July 31. 1860. In smart full calf binding, with gilt detailing and marbled endpapers. Externally, very smart, with light bumping and rubbing to the extremities. The odd small mark to boards. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd mark, mainly to the first and last pages.
