In attractive full calf binding, with intricate gilt detailing and gilt to the fore edge. With a binders signature of R. Ingalton Drake to the reverse of the front endpaper. This is a prizewinner binding awarded by the headmaster of Eton College, Edmond Warre, to Geoffrey Malcolm Gathorne-Hardy in 1896. The collected poems of Thomas Gray, English poet known for his 1751 Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. This work is comprised of many poems, including Ode on the Spring, The Triumphs of Owen and the Hymn to Adversity. Containing Gray's original poems as well as translations into English and Latin verse of the works of Petrarca, from the Anthologia Græca, and others. Featuring a frontispiece portrait of the author as well as decorative initials, head and tail pieces, and other full page plates of engravings of charming landscapes. In full calf prize winner binding. Externally, very smart, with light bumping and rubbing to the extremities. The odd mark to boards. Slight wear to the head of the spine and the rear of the board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with the odd handling mark. Slightly age toned to some pages. Ink inscription to prize winner dedication. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None.
