Author: Julius Chambers Title: Missing: A Romance. A Tale of the Sargasso Sea.
Description: New York, The Transatlantic Publishing Company , 1896. First edition. Cloth. A very scarce first edition of this novel set in the Sargasso sea, featuring sea captains and castaways. This is a first edition of the work, in smart green cloth binding, with a sea motif to the front board, with gilt lettering. Julius Chambers was an American author, travel writer and activist. He wrote sixteen novels in his life, with 'Missing' being his fourth. Much of his work centred around mental health awareness, with his first, most well-known work, 'A Mad World' being written after he had visited an Asylum in New York, undercover. 'Missing' follows the story of Captain Austin Clark, who is held captive by a community of castaways who live on the derelict ships left in the Sargasso. The Sargasso Sea is a region of the Atlantic Ocean known for its four main currents and for having no land boundaries. Because of this lack of coastline, it can be highly difficult to navigate, resulting in it being labelled the sea of Lost Ships. With a frontispiece of a woman in a gown with a plate of grapes. Pencil inscription to the rear endpaper, of J. E. Nellie, dated 1901. In original publisher's green cloth binding. Externally, excellent, with minor shelf wear and light fading to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Pencil inscription to the rear endpaper, dated 1901.
