This novel was selected as the winner, by a panel that included Dennis Wheatley.This marked the beginning of 'The Baron' series, with the central character - John Mannering - going on to figure in several dozen novels, and becoming a popular hero.With the front wrap, front flyleaf and back strip of a facsimile dust wrapper also present, alongside the publisher's original dust wrapper.The very scarce first edition of this work. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with price unclipped dust wrapper. Fading and bumping to back strip head and tail, with boards exceptionally bright. Chipping to dust wrapper back strip tail, with two significant losses to head of front wrap, and a small loss to the head of the rear wrap .
