The second edition of this work, which was first published in 1888. Both contemporary editions are very scarce. Essentially a social treatise, in this work the titular character, leads a predominantly female group in forming a "socialist home", an early experiment in equal, communal living. The home prioritises collaborative parenting, progressive early childhood education, and gender equality in the home"s division of labour.The novel also contains strong feminist themes, something reflected in Clapperton's political work. A birth control pioneer, she associated ethical behaviour with full sexual freedom and equality for women - in the home, the workplace and wider society.This is thought to be the author's only novel.A loosely inserted clipping from the Daily Mail, dated 25.9.1933, notes that in a speech Prime Minister Ramsay Macdonald refereed to this work in a speech, saying that he had read her novel years prior, 'wishing to get some sort of intellectual anchorage for my Scots mind wherein idealism was mingled with caution and haste, with care and hope, with thoughtfulness&apos. Undated; dated via Jisc.
