The first edition of this early twentieth century work of speculative fiction, flat signed to the author to the title page, with 'yours sincerely Edward G Herbert&apos.Herbert's novel - which he uses to express his social and political views - describes an isolated island that functions as a socialist utopia, but ultimately fails, due in large part to human nature.In his concluding remarks, Herbert notes that he believes 'that socialism would aggravate every one of the ills that you and I deplore', however also mounts an argument that a free and universal vaccination scheme should be put into action.He suggests that if socialists disagree with his conclusions, the 'socialists should carry out their policy in an experimental colony of socialists' and that we should all 'watch the results that follow when that policy is carried out in its entirety&apos.
