A very scarce to see set of seven issues of the University of Birmingham's rag, 'Carnival&apos. In their original bright decorative wraps.Birmingham's rag was published from October 1926 until 1958. This rag, 'Carnival', was a cheap magazine sold by students to members of the public during Rag Week, which took place annually around Shrove Tuesday.Birmingham's 'Carnival' rag raid is one of the largest and most successful in the country. 'Carnival' contains a variety of anonymously-contributed contents, including adverts, stories, and cartoons. Often the contents were offensive or irreverent to authorities, with rags and rag weeks of various universities' becoming controversial in the first half of the twentieth century due to their perceived antisocial behaviour. This set includes the years: 1929, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1935, 1937, and 1947. In the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally, smart, with a little age-toning and some minor marks and spots to the wraps. Staples are a little rusted. 1929 with a vertical fold to the wraps. 1933 with a vertical fold to the front wrap. Tide mark to the front wrap of 1935. Internally, firmly bound.
