Collated, complete. Gilbert Abbott à Beckett (1811-1856) was an English humorist, best known for this work, The Comic History of England. This two-volume work provides a humorous re-telling of British history, from the Roman Invasion to William the Conqueror, to Henry VIII and the Commonwealth, concluding with George the Second. Illustrated throughout by John Leech (1817-1864), an English caricaturist and illustrator. Undated, dated through copies held at the British Library. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth bindings. Externally smart, though faded to the spines with shelf wear to the extremities, causing losses to the cloth. Gilt remains bright. Front hinge to Volume I is slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd scattering of spots, more so to the first and last few pages. Very Good . Ill.: John Leech.
