Bookplate of Sir Edward Levy-Lawson (1833-1916), 1st Baron Burnham and 1st Baronet, to the front paste down of each volume. Sir Edward Levy-Lawson was the owner and publisher of The Daily Telegraph. Charles Greville (1794-1865) wrote his diaries between 1817 to 1837, to record events during the reigns of King George IV and King William IV. They were edited by Henry Reeve and first published in three parts: the first three volumes, covering 1817 to 1837, were published in 1874; the next three, for the period from 1837 to 1852, were published in 1885; and the final two, covering 1852 to 1860, were published in 1887. Some passages caused great offence, in particular to Queen Victoria, who was "horrified and indignant". In a full calf bindings. Externally very smart, with a little rubbing to the extremities of each volume. Rubbing to the rear board of Volume I, front board of Volume VIII, and to the head and tail of the spine to Volume II and VI. Lower corner to the rear board of Volume VIII is somewhat bumped. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age toned to the page perimeters with the occasional spot. Faint tidemark to the lower corner of pages 217 to 257 of Volume I. Very Good Indeed .
