The scarce first edition of this work, by English poet and translator Margaret Holford.Holford's metrical romance, arranged in five cantos, describes Wallace's heroism, and eventual defeat at the Battle of Falkirk, in 1298.Since his death, Wallace remained a celebrated figure in Scottish literature. He is the focus of Blind Harry's 15th-century epic poem 'The Wallace', and the subject of literary works Sir Walter Scott.Holford had a wide circle of literary acquaintances and correspondents that included correspondence with Walter Scott in 1825, Samuel Coleridge, and William Wordsworth. Joanna Baillie was a close associate. In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Significant rubbing to back strip and board perimeters, with losses of leather to joints and back strip head and tail. Boards detached. Bookplate to front pastedown. Front free endpaper detached. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned to perimeters, with the odd spot, and pencil inscription. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
