Written by Erckmann-Chatrian, the name used by French authors Emile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian on works completed together. Previously held in the library of John Gretton, a British businessman and Conservative politician who won two gold medals in the 1900 Olympic Games as a yachtsman. In the original half calf binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the board. Minor loss to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting to the first and last few pages. The odd pencil annotation. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper.
