Hodgkin taught at Queen's College Oxford between1900 and 1937, and is best known for his 1949 book, Six Centuries of an Oxford College, and the present work. As well as describing major events such as the Viking invasion and the Danish Wars, Hodgkin also provides insight into Anglo-Saxon culture, and tools. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper of both volumes, 'B. J. Findlay 1967&apos. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding, with the original price clipped dust wrapper to volume II. Externally generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, with some light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine. Volume I is rather discoloured to the spine, and is a little bumped to the extremities. The wrap to volume II is a little edge word to the head of the spine and the top edge, with a small tear to the fore edge to the fore edge and to the front joint near the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound, with bright and clean pages throughout. Very Good . Ill.: Various. Very Good/Good.
