Title: The History of Comines (1596) and Sallust: The Conspiracy of Catiline and the War of Jagurtha (1608)
Description: London, David Nutt; Constable and Co, 1897-1924. First edition. Cloth. Three volumes containing the memoires of Phillipe de Commines and the historical works of the Roman historian Sallust. From the Tudor translations series. Three volumes containing reprints of fifteenth century translations. From the Tudor Translations Series. Thomas Danett translates the memoires of Phillipe de Commines; a fifteenth century diplormat and writer in the courts of Burgundy and and under Louis XI in the courts of France. Commines memoires are a major primary source for fifteenth century European history, not only because of his analysis of the contemporary political scene, but because of his cynical and forthright attitude to machinations he witnessed in the courts of Louis XI. Reprinted from the revised text of 1601. A limited edition copy of Sallust, in which Charles Whilbey offers a biographical introduction to the Roman historian and politician, before Thomas Heywood provides translations of his Sallust's accounts of the Conspiracy of Catiline and The Jugurthine War in the first and second centuries. Prior owner's bookplate to volume I of The History of Commines. From the library of antiquarian, historian, and local politician William Henry Duigan. Duigan wrote several books and pamphlets on local history, particularly on the etymology of place names. Carl Duigan has crossed out William's name and added his own in ink. In the publisher original cloth covered calf binding over calf boards. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, particularly at the edges of Sallust. Lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine, and a little rubbed to the joints. The spine is also a little discoloured, as is the cloth to the front joint of Sallust. The front and rear hinges are starting, but firm to Sallust. Internally, generally firmly bound with bright and clean pages throughout. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
