Edward George Kirwan Browne - Annals of the Tractarian Movement, from 1842 to 1860

Title: Annals of the Tractarian Movement, from 1842 to 1860
Description: London, Privately printed, 1861. Leather. A very scarce history of the Tractarian Movement, or Oxford Movement. A very scarce work in a half calf binding. Bookplate and sticker to the front paste down. Stamp to the title page. The Tractarian or Oxford Movement, started in the 1830s, was a movement of high church members of the Church of England, mainly associated with the University of Oxford. The movement argued for the reinstatement of older Christian traditions and their inclusion into Anglican liturgy and theology. The movement's philosophy was known as Tractarianism after its publications, the Tracts for the Times, published from 1833 to 1841. This work contains a history of the movement and includes letters between members, in annals from 1842 to 1860. There are many pages of ruled leaves either side of the text, presumably for the reader's notes. In a half calf binding. Externally sound, with rubbing to the extremities and spine. Front joint is split. Front hinge is strained but held firmly by cords. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned but generally clean, except for a scattering of spots to the first and last few pages. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
