Four scarce volumes about the Egyptian Temple of Edfu published by the French Institute for Oriental Archaeology in Cairo. Four scarce volumes on the Temple of Edfu published by the French Institute for Oriental Archaeology in Cairo. Published in French. Founded in 1880, the French Institute for Oriental Archaeology in Cairo was intended as a counterpart of the French School at Athens, and the French School in Rome. At the time these volumes were published, the director was Egyptologist Émile Gaston Chassinat. Built on the west bank of the Nile in Edfu between 237 and 57 BC, the temple is one of the best preserved shrines in Egypt. The inscriptions on its walls provide important information on language, myth, and religion during the Hellenistic period in Egypt. The present collection of memoirs includes volume 11 and its accompanying plate volume, as well as volumes 30 and 33. Volume 30 reproduces paintings found in the courtyard and on the internal face of west wall of the temple, whilst volume thirty 33 reproduces the hieroglyphs engraved on the wall of the temple and on the door frames. In a red quarter calf binding over red cloth boards. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the joints and the head and tail of the spine. The calf at the extremities is scuffed to all volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean throughout. Very Good . Ill.: Various. Very Good .
