Henry Franois Becque (April 9, 1837 - May 1899), French dramatist, was born in Lille. He wrote the book of an opera Sardanapale in imitation of Lord Byron for the music of Victorin de Joncires in 1867, but his first important work, Michel Pauper, appeared in 1870. The importance of this sombre drama was first realized when it was revived at the Odon in 1886. Les Corbeaux (1882) established Becque's position as an innovator, and in 1885 he produced his most successful play, La Parisienne. Becque produced little during the last years of his life, but his disciples carried on the tradition he had created. Volume I contains Sardanapale, L'Enfant Prodigue, Michel Pauper, and L'Enlevement. Volume II contains Les Corbeaux and La Parisienne. Volume III contains La Navette, Les Honnetes Femmes, Le Depart, et Pieces Diverses These volumes bear the bookplate of The Right Hon. Sir Ronald Charles Lindsay. He served as British Ambassador to the United States of America from 1929 to 1939. He was the son of Sir James Lindsay (26th Earl of Crawford) and Emily Lindsay.
