Title: Cours de Littă©Rature Dramatique, Ou de L&Apos;Usage Des Passions Dans le Drame
Description: Paris, Charpentier, 1868-1872. Leather. An attractive leather bound set of Marc Giradin's best known work of literary criticism. An attractive copy of Marc Giradin's chief work on the dramatic passions. Published in French. In this series of lectures the French writer examines the mode in which dramatic passions are treated in ancient and modern drama, poetry and romance. In his defence of ancient modes of drama, Giradin displays hostility to the Romanticism that had swept across Europe. Mixed editions. Paradoxically, the first volume was published in 1872, the next three volumes were published in 1870, and the final volume in 1868. In a prize binding with a prize bookplate to the front pastedown of volumes II and IV. The book was awarded to Murray Giles at the College Municipal de Rollin in Paris. The schools was founded as the private Collège Sainte-Barbe in 1821, and renamed Collège Rollin in 1830. It is the only school in Paris to have taken the name of a former teacher, Jacques Decour who was a French Resistance fighter in 1944. In a full green leather binding with gilt to College Municipal de Rollin to the front board. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, a little more so to the first two volumes. Volume II is missing a little calf to the head of the spine, and the remaining volumes are lightly rubbed to the head, with some rubbing to the tail of the first three volumes. The front hinge of volume II is starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some light spotting. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
