Author: - Title: A Leaf from the Future History of England on the Subject of Reform in Parliament
Description: London, Roake & Varty, [1831]. Brochure/Pamphlet. A very scarce pamphlet in which the author demonstrates his contempt for the Reform Act of 1832. A very scarce political pamphlet discussing the changes to the electoral system initiated by the Reform Act of 1832. The Representation of the People Act introduced major changes to the electoral system of England and Wales by abolishing tiny districts, giving representation to cities, and by granting the vote to small landowners, tenant farmers, shopkeepers, and households to paid more that £10 rent in a year. The changes met significant opposition from those in William Pitt's faction, yet the bill was eventually passed as a result of public pressure. In the pamphlet, the author offers a report of the events that led to the Reform Act of 1882 as if writing from the future. The author is clearly opposed to the act, as he describes how England resisted the radicalism incited by the French Revolution, only to fall 'by suicide&apos. The author speaks ill of leftist writers such as William Cobbett for stirring up support, describes the radical reform bill as bait, and throws disparaging marks about the 'multitude' that have been granted access to the House of Commons. A pamphlet. Externally, sound. The outer pages are a little grubby, with some moderate edge wear to the bottom edge and the fore edge. Internally, the binding is a little tender. Pages are clean and generally bright. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
