A first edition of the works of French Hellenist and political writer Paul Louis Courier. Published in French, with a frontispiece to volume I. Following the biography of Courier that opens the set, the reader can find some of the political pamphlets and letters which made Courier one of the most dreaded opponents of the Restoration government. As well as discussing local wrongs in his own district, he also exposes the sufferings of the peasantry in his advocation for a liberal monarchy. The third volume contains a discussion of Lucius of Patras, an ancient Greek writer about which little is known. The final volume is comprised of Courier's letters. As he deals with the facts and events of his own time, the writings of Courier are valuable sources of information as to the condition of France before, during, and after the Revolution. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. From the library of John Rushout, the second Baron of Northwick. Rushout befriended several eminent men such as Edward Gibbon and Horatio Nelson whilst touring Europe after his university degree in Switzerland. Rushout developed a love of antique art, and became a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1832. With the spine label of volume III tucked in. In a full brown calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the spine, a little more so to the joints. The leather to the front board of volume IV is a little scuffed. Volume III is missing the spine label but it has been tucked into the volume. Volume IV is missing a slither of calf to the head of the spine. The front joint to volume I is beginning to crack. The rear hinge is starting, but firm to volume IV. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with light foxing throughout. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
