The fifth edition of this work in the original moire silk binding. Ink inscription to the first blank page, dated 1882. Marie Pape-Carpantier (1815–1878) was a French educator who revolutionised education in French schools. She worked hard to alleviate poverty and social injustice, and to encourage female education. This work contains a collection of her stories, providing lessons for children. Illustrated throughout by Bertall, otherwise known as Charles Albert d'Arnoux (1820-1882). In the original moire silk binding. Externally, bumped to the extremities with shelf wear to the boards and spine. A couple of small losses to the silk of the head and tail of the spine. Silk is lifting to the tail of the spine. Front hinge is strained but held firmly by cords. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright but with the odd spot throughout. Ink inscription to the first blank page. Ink inscription and markings to the title page. Doodles in colour pencil to the front paste down and rear free end paper.
