Description: London, A. Millar, 1758. First edition. Disbound. A first edition of John Home's first play. A first edition of John Home's first play about Agis, King of Sparta. The minister's retelling of Plutarch's narrative was produced at Drury Lane by in 1758 by David Garrick. However, the play was overshadowed by the success of Home's later drama Douglas, which became a standard text in Scottish schools until the Second World War. This first edition is the variant with 'Written by ------ ' beneath the Prologue heading. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front page. No author is given in typescript, so the owner has added, 'By a Mr Home, a Scotch Minister, Author of Douglas&apos. Checked using JISC, from a copy held at the British Library. Disbound. Externally, smart with bright outer pages. Internally, the binding is tender. The first two pages are rather loose, as are the final twenty where the top cords have failed. Pages are generally bright and clean with the odd spot. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
