In the late first and early second century BCE Juvenal authored a collection of satirical poems known as the satires that have become a vital source for the study of ancient Rome. The satires are reproduced here, with explanatory notes and interpretations by Prateus. Several prior owners have inscribed their name in ink to the recto of the front endpaper. Including 'M. Meredith' in 1732, 'Thomas Postlethwaite', from Cambridge university in 1802, Kenneth Howard from Manchester Grammar in 1937, and Roland H. Howard from Oxford University in 1939.
