The signature of Sir John Gilbert - an English painter, engraver and illustrator - appears on the excised and mounted final portion of a personal letter. Beginning mid-sentence, and undated, the letter reads 'doing me a personal favour. I won't press further, believe me, yours truly John Gilbert&apos.In Gilbert's second letter, dated 1893, the artist offers his apologies, and adds 'at the same time I cannot help marvelling at the absurdity of troubling a [..] instructing astutely whose time is - to him - of some value by contrast&apos. A clipping of a drawing by Gilbert, and a portrait of the artist from a newspaper, are pasted to the reverse of this letter.The final letter is from the painter Frank Holl, who was known for his sentimental paintings and depictions of Victorian England. It is handwritten on the letterhead of the Three Gables, the Hampstead home he shared with his wife, and is dated February 1888, only five months before his death. Three handwritten leaves, a touch age toned and with light handling marks. Two clippings pasted to the reverse of the larger of the Gilbert letters.
