Bound in two volumes, with the engraved title to Volume I, and typed title to Volume II.The first edition, early mixed issue of this work, bound from the parts with stab holes to the gutter. Issue points present: 'Bradbury & Evans' to the title page; the vignette title shows the hook on Captain Cuttle's left arm rather than his right; no quotation marks around the word 'party' to page XV line 2; 'delight' rather than 'joy' to page 284 5 lines up from the bottom; no apostrophe in 'aint' on page 14 10 lines up from the bottom; 'shewed' and 'shew' to for 'showed' and 'show' to page 40 lines 16 and 17; 'fidgetty' for 'fidgety' on page 26 on line 11; and no full stop to the final line to page 582. Issue points not present: entry for the frontispiece and vignette to the list of plates; 'Capatin' for 'Captain' as the final word on page 324; and 'if' is present to page 426 line 9.Issue points as stated by John C. Eckel in his 1913 publication 'The First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens&apos.Volume I illustrated with frontispiece, vignette title, and twenty plates.Volume II illustrated with eighteen plates.Bound without the half-title and additional errata slip, however all plates are present, including the dark plate. Plate 35, 'On the Dark Road' facing page 547, is the first published example of a 'dark plate&apos."Dombey and Son" is about Paul Dombey, the owner of a shipping company, who intends to pass down ownership of his company to his son, ignoring his daughter, Florence. The novel tells the story of their family, and their hopes and fearsDickens is one of the most popular authors of the Victorian age. His novels show the grimy side of poverty and prosperity in Victorian England, showing poor social conditions alongside repulsive characters.Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne, most often known by his pen-name 'Phiz&apos. As Phiz, he illustrated many of Dickens' novels, including 'David Copperfield', 'Dombey and Son', and 'Bleak House', as well as illustrating for 'Punch' throughout his life. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, worn. Lacking the head of the spine of Volume II. Front joint of Volume II has failed, board still attached to the text block due to a prior owner's tape repair to the gutter.Front hinge of Volume II is a little strained. Rubbing to the boards and spines, heavier to the marbled paper. Minor bumping to the extremities, and to the head and tail of the spine of Volume I, where the head of the spine is lifting a little. Tide mark to the joints of Volume I. Hinges are starting but firm. Damp stain to the front paste down, front endpapers, and first few pages of Volume I. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front free endpapers. Light marks to the endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright with some spotting, mostly to the plates. Page 17/18 is detached but present. Pages 1-4 are detaching. Tide mark to the head of the first quarter of the text of Volume II. Good Only . Ill.: Hablot Knight Browne; [Phiz]. Good Only .
