Author: Title: The Narrative and Reasons Which Were Delivered by the House of Commons, to the Lords at the Last Conference, Touching the Trials of the Lords in the Tower
Description: London, Not Stated, 1679. Disbound. A very scarce contemporary pamphlet regarding the trials and pardons of the Lords accused of being involved in the Popish Plot. A very scarce work.ESTC citation number R10051.Collated, complete, with irregular pagination. An interesting pamphlet regarding the pardon of Thomas Osborne, and the trial of five lords condemned in the Popish Plot: Earl of Powis, Viscount Stafford, Lord Petre, Lord Arundel of Wardour, and Lord Bellasis. The Popish Plot was a fictitious conspiracy formed by Titus Oates, in which he alleges that there was a Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II. This led to a fraught anti-Catholic hysteria in England and Scotland. At least 22 men were executed on Oates' accusations.Oates daringly accused the five Catholic Lords of being involved in the Plot, though the King saw the accusations as absurd, particularly as two of the lords, Arundell and Stafford, had not been on speaking terms for 25 years. Disbound, as issued. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are a little age-toned with some spots and marks. Very small chip to the tail of the title page. Minor edge wear to the wraps. Faint tide mark to the final leaf. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
