William Cowper was a popular English poet who helped initiate the Romantic movement, with his descriptions of life in the English countryside. After a stint of being institutionalised for insanity, Cowper recovered and began focusing on writing religious works. He was strongly against slavery, using his poems to try and support the Abolitionist campaign. A page of publisher's advertisements to the rear of volume II. In half calf bindings. Externally smart, with some shelf wear to the boards and extremities. Front hinges to both volumes are strained, with front joints cracking, but still held firmly by cords. Internally, firmly bound.
