Description: Oxford, Oxford University Press, 1959. First edition. Cloth. A first edition of this facsimile reprint of papyrus number 1874, a list of Egyptian kings compiled by the Egyptians themselves. A first edition of this facsimile reprint of the most comprehensive list of Egyptian kings that they themselves compiled, with an introduction by Egyptologist, philologist, and linguist Alan H. Gardiner. Found on the verso of the fragmented papyrus number 1874 of the Museo Egizio in Turin is the most comprehensive list of Egyptian kings believed to be intended as an official administrative reference aid providing us with a rare insight into the Egyptians own view and awareness of their past. The list has become the corner-stone of all chronological schemes for Egyptian history before the Ramessides, although Egyptologists range in their attitude towards the information provided in the document. The copy previously belonged to the East Riding County Library, and therefore has an institutional sticker to the front pastedown, and 091 marked to the spine. In the publisher's original brown cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Rubbed to the boards and the spine. Lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities, causing a little discolouration of the cloth. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some light offsetting to the front and rear endpapers, pages are bright and clean. Very Good . Ill.: Not stated. Very Good .
