Author: William Hayley Title: The Triumphs of Temper, a Poem: In Six Cantos
Description: London, William Mason for T. Cadell et al, 1817 . Leather. A bright copy of this uncommon 'New Edition' of William Hayley's popular moral poem, featuring a vibrant colour copper-plate frontispiece. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece from a drawing by George Romney, engraved by T B Brown. Such prints were infrequently produced due to the impracticalities of printing from a copper-plate in several colours, which entailed re-inking the plate for each shade. With a folding facsimile letter from the author, dated 1817, prior to the frontispiece.'The Triumphs of Temper' is William Hayley's best known poem. The work chronicles the trials and tribulations that his fictitious heroine, Serena, faces. It explores how she overcame them through the virtues of a pleasant nature and sweet temper. A didactic work, 'The Triumphs of Temper' is said to have reformed the entire feminine mind of England. In this edition there are some additions compared to previous editions, with new lines to page 102, and variations to page 106. In a straight grain morocco binding, with blind tooling to board perimeters. Significant rubbing to back strip head and tail and front joints, otherwise very smart. Front hinge lightly strained but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Tail of frontispiece detached, but firmly held. Offsetting to title page, with pages otherwise clean and bright. Very Good . Ill.: George Romney; T B Brown. Very Good .
