He was brought to Rome as an enslaved person and was freed by Terentius Lucanus, a Roman senator, due to his abilities. Terence's plays were used to learn to speak Latin in the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance, and were imitated by William Shakespeare in some instances. First printed in 1470, his works were popular during the revival of classical literature. Illustrated with an engraved monochrome plates frontispiece. Collated, complete. Prior owner's book plate to the first pastedown. From the library of the Earl of Berkshire Lord Marshall of England, dated 1720, being Henry Bowes Howard (1686-1757), English peer. Many of the pages are worn to the extremities and suffering some loss, including the frontispiece. In full calf binding. Externally, fair. There is some loss to the tail of the spine, and considerable rubbing to the boards, the spine, and the extremities. The joints are slightly cracked, and the hinges are starting but firm. Prior owner's book plate to the first pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally bright and clean, with some light spots throughout and also some marking throughout.
