He argues that several factors contributed to the growth of Nonconformity, including the Welsh language, which he believed was a barrier to communication between Welsh speaking people and the English speaking clergy of the Church of England.Johnes also points to the lack of Welsh representation in the higher ranks of the Church of England and the absence of a Welsh bishop, which he believed led to a feeling of alienation among Welsh people.
