A scarce copy in commerce. First and only edition. No half title as called for. Inscribed to verso front free endpaper 'Bought at the sale of J. M. Gutch's Library in London 16 March 1858.' John Mathew Gutch was an English journalist and historian; his library was large and rich in the works of George Wither, and it was sold by Sotheby & Wilkinson for over £1,800 (about £286,170 today). A survey of the city of Bristol concerned with the burgesses and commonalities, with notes on the important benefactors and endowments from as early as the late thirteenth century. Written by John Cranidge. James Bush bookplate to front pastedown. Rebound in half straight up grain morocco over cloth covered boards, renewed endpapers. Externally smart with some shelf wear, lightly faded to spine, boards only lightly marked. Paper repairs to title page affecting part of printer's information, and to the top edge of first few leaves (up to p. 9.) and last few leaves (pp. 293-296), affecting part of pagination and text particularly to leaves t rear. Evidence of the attempted removal of a sticker to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting scattered to leaves. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
