The first edition in book form, originally published in parts between 1846 and 1848.Complete in two volumes.Volume I illustrated with ten hand coloured plates, and in-text engravings.Volume II illustrated with ten hand coloured plates, and in-text engravings.Collated, all plates are present, but bound without half-titles.'The Comic History of England' is a humorous re-telling of British history, from the Roman Invasion to William the Conqueror, to Henry VIII and the Commonwealth, concluding with George the Second.Written by Gilbert Beckett, a humorist who was one of the original staff of 'Punch&apos. He was also a journalist for 'The Times', 'The Morning Herald', and 'Illustrated London News&apos. With his wife, Mary, he wrote two operas, 'Agnes Sorrel' and 'Red Riding Hood&apos. Illustrated by the caricaturist John Leech, who is best known for his prolific work for Punch. His scathing portrayal of current events led to a great popularity of his work. Leech also illustrated Beckett's 'Comic History of Rome', as well as 'Hood's Comic Annual' and 'Wassail Bowl&apos.Bookplate of Sir Frederick Richmond to the front paste downs. Richmond was the chairman of both Debenhams and Harvey Nichols. In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Leather is rubbed, heavier to the joints and head and tail of the spines. Minor bumping to the extremities. A few small marks to the boards. Spine label of Volume II is repaired with a small chip. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and generally clean with scattered spotting. Very Good . Ill.: John Leech. Very Good .
