Title: A Treatise on the Decorative Part of CIVIL Architecture, with Illustrations, Notes, and an Examination of Grecian Architecture
Description: London, Lockwood and Co. 1862. Cloth. An academic treatise on civil architecture by the designer of Somerset House and the Pagoda at Kew. Edited by W.H. Leeds, this volume comprises William Chambers' treatise on Civil architecture, and Joseph Gwilt's discussion of Grecian architecture. With sixty six plates in total, collated and complete. Originally published in 1759, Chamber's treatise on civil architecture was influential on builders of the eighteenth century. Rather than dwell on details of construction and planning, the work offers suggestions for decorative architectural elements.
