Mary Hays was an intellectual best remembered for her work in early feminism and her close relationships with the likes of Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin among others. This is the first edition of her collection of love letters exchanged with John Eccles between 1779 and 1780. The pair met in 1777, but their parents opposed the match, so the couple met in secret and exchanged many letters. Sadly, Eccles died in 1780 just as he received a job that would allow him to marry Hay. Edited by her great-great niece A. F. Wedd. A scarce copy, rarely seen in commerce. Denis Gray's ex libris bookplate to front free endpaper. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with minor shelf wear, bumped to head and tail of spine and extremities, damp marks scattered to boards, ack strip darkened, boards lightly marked. Internally, firmly bound.
