Dated via Jisc. George Bidwell tells of his life with a detailed account and history of the Old Bailey trial for the 1873 Bank of England forgeries, which saw four American con-artists defrauding the Bank of £102,213 (about £10 million in 2015). The men were brothers George and Austin Bidwell, George MacDonnell and Edwin Noyes; they were tried and sentenced to life imprisonment. George Bidwell was released in 1887 due to poor health, Austin was released in 1892. MacDonnell and Noyes were released a few months later and resumed their criminal careers in the United States. The London Times described these forgeries as one of the "most skilful attempts to prey upon the complex organization of modern commerce."With numerous illustrations including frontispiece.
