B.' to the head of the title page.To the verso of the title page is the inscription 'This and 16 other volumes were presented to the Finsbury Mutual Instruction Society by Dr. Bowring the day previous to his departure from England as British Consul at Canton, accompanied with his best wishes for the success and welfare of the society&apos.Bowring was a British political economist, writer, literary translator, and the fourth Governor of Hong Kong. As this not remarks, in 1849 he was appointed British consul at Canton.A charming volume of poetry from Quaker poet Bernard Barton, known for his work 'The Convict's Appeal', which protested against the death penalty.With an advertisement to the rear.A scarce first edition with an interesting association. In the original paper covered boards. Front board detached, with rear board tenderly held by one leaf only. Majority of back strip lacking. Title page detached, otherwise generally firmly bound.
