Title: Eugenie Grandet, Old Goriot, and the Country Doctor
Description: London, The Caxton Publishing Company, 1897. Cloth. Three volumes of work by Honoré de Balzac, regarded as one of the founders of Realism. Three volumes. Written by Honoré de Balzac, a French novelist and playwright regarded as one of the founders of Realism owing to his keen observation of detail and unfiltered representation of society. Each novel is illustrated with a frontispiece. Eugenie Grandet, 1897. A study of life in provincial France, and the interconnection between the private lives of the Grandet family and the public life of the town of Saumur. Old Goriot, 1898. Set in Paris in 1819, it follows the intertwined lives of three characters: the elderly doting Goriot, a mysterious criminal-in-hiding named Vautrin and a naive law student named Eugène de Rastignac. The Country Doctor, 1899. The second in his Scène de la vie de Campagne series, this work addresses the author's preoccupations with social organisation, political power and religion, though Balzac's own political principles were not those of the character Dr Benassis. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, smart with light shelf wear to the extremities and bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Old Goriot has marks to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with light age toning to the first and last few pages. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
