Scarce in its original illustrated hardback boards Comprised of issues 1 to 25 of Pierce Egan's Book of Sports and Mirror of Life, with twenty five illustrations. Egan provides an entertaining compendium of sports lore, with articles on horse racing, boxing, cricket, and fencing. Pierce Egan was a British journalist and sports writer, who also wrote about popular culture. His 1821 book, Life in London, was adapted into a stage play and became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances at the Adelphi Theatre. This volume is uncommon, but particularly in its original illustrated hardback boards. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. This volume was previously owned by Purnell Bransby Purnell, who was MP for Gloucester in the early nineteenth century. In the publisher's original binding. Externally, worn. Lightly rubbed to the boards with some wear to the extremities. The spine is missing, and the boards are held together by cords only and may detach with further handling.
