Includes volumes I-VI, the first 158 pages of volume VII, and volume VIII. The Journal of Hellenic Studies is an annual peer-reviewed academic journal covering research in Hellenic studies, along with reviews of books on relevant subjects. Established in 1880, the volumes in this set were produced under editor in chief Percy Gardner, who was a classical archaeologist and numismatist working at the University of Oxford. The volumes open with a list of the rules of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies. The index accompanying the journal helps find the articles relevant to coins and numismatics across volumes published between 1880 and 1969. Found with the first 158 pages of volume VI, tied together with cords but disbound. Volume I has a renewal sticker and institutional stamp from the Borough of Southwark Central Library to the first page. The third and fourth books, holding volumes V, VI and VIII have institutional stamps to the recto of the front end paper. There are library stamps to title pages of all volumes except the index, alongside an ink inscription from Robert Taul to volumes I and II, with a later inscription dated 1885 reading 'presented to my daughter Amallia' to the title page of volume I. Library plate from Chelsea Public Libraries to the front pastedown of all books except that holding volumes V and VI. Crest of Chelsea Public Library the spine of the book containing volume V and VI. Prior owners red ink inscription to the front cover of the Index. Reads '016.7374938 Jon&apos. Renewal sticker from the London Borough of Southwark Adult Libraries to the front pastedown, along with a pocket with the library index card. Institutional stamp from library to verso of title page. Volumes I and II have been bound together in brown cloth, whilst volumes III and IV have bene bound together in black cloth. Volumes V and VI are bound together in a three quarter cloth binding over marbled boards, as is volume VIII. The Numismatic Index is in the publisher's original paper binding. Externally, generally smart. Volume I has some white marks to the front board, and has two tears in the cloth at the spine, with a little loss of cloth to the head and tail of the spine . The book containing volumes V and VI has also lost a little cloth to the head of the spine, whilst volume VIII is a little rubbed to the front board. Front and rear hinges of volume I starting, and are a little tender. Internally, firmly bound, aside from volume VII which was found incomplete and disbound, with only the first 158 pages.
