Originally published in 1857, this novel is set at Rugby School, a public school in the midlands that the author attended himself. The novel's protagonist is believed to be based on Thomas Hughes' brother George. Illustrated by Arthur Hughes and Sydney Prior Hall. The former was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, whilst the latter was one of the leading reportage artists of the later Victorian Period. With a plastic wallet containing early 20th century newspaper clippings tucked in. The clippings are predominantly related to Thomas Hughes and the great fight between Tom Brown and Slogger Williams. Includes an image of Thomas Hughes' Statue at Rugby School, and an obituary of Reverend Bulkley Owen Jones, the real 'Slogger Williams&apos. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Egerton Parker&apos. Parker was a history teacher at Hereford Cathedral School. Ink inscription to rear free endpaper. Reads 'Dr Arnold was born in Lowes 1795. Head master of Rugby from 1828 to 1842&apos. The novel features Dr Thomas Arnold and the work is dedicated to his wife. Rebound in a quarter calf binding over hard boards. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, with some light wear to the extremities and the fore edge. Internally, firmly bound.
