Title: Rubã¡Iyã¡T of Omar Khayyã¡M
Description: New York, Thomas Y. Crowell Co. c1910. Leather. A delightful copy of Edward Fitzgerald's translation of the Persian quatrains attributed to Omar Khayyam, found in publisher's box and original glassine wrap A delightful and scarce copy of Edward Fitzgerald's most famous poem, and the best-known translation of the Persian quatrains attributed to Omar Khayyam. With eight colour plates and a decorative title page. Fitzgerald produced four different translations with substantial revisions. This is the first translation. Although commercially unsuccessful at first, Fitzgerald's work was popularised from 1861 onwards, and the work came to be greatly admired by the Pre-Raphaelites in England. By the 1880s, the book was extremely popular throughout the English-speaking world, to the extent that numerous Omar Khayyam clubs were formed. Ink inscription to the front of the publisher's box box reads 'Knight A.H.C.' Undated. Dated c1910 by the Haathi Digital Library. No author given. In the publisher's original brown leather binding with gilt, found in the original glassine wrap, in the publisher's original box. The box is in poor condition, with one of the sides nearly broken off on the bottom, and one side missing from the lid. The paper on the cardboard box is also very loose. Small closed tear in the glassine wrap to the front board. Externally, lovely. Internally, firmly bound. A little foxed at the fore edge of the text block, but otherwise pages are generally bright and clean with the occasional mark throughout. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: Willy Pogany. Very Good Indeed/Good.
